Eminem seems to be playing his real self in “The Interview,” up until the moment in the film that he admits to being gay, that is.

In the film, the rapper flaunts his comedic chops by maintaining his trademark glare while (most likely fictitiously) coming out of the closet as he speaks to James Franco’s character about the meaning of his lyrics.

“When I say things about gay people, or people think my lyrics are homophobic — it’s because I’m gay,” he says before immediately jumping to another topic.

And, when Franco asks him to back up, Eminem clarifies by saying that he is attracted to men and has been leaving a “breadcrumb trail of gayness” in his songs.

The joke also shows that Eminem can laugh at his controversial past, as he was previously called homophobic due to his use of the word “faggot” in his lyrics.

He has since explained that he was not referring to gay men with this term, and in 2010, voiced support for gay marriage, according to the Huffington Post.

“The Interview” is available in select theaters, and online for $5.99 to rent.
